Guideline-based advances in integrated TCM-western medicine for knee osteoarthritis
By searching the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, PubMed, Medlive, Baidu Scholar, and international guideline development and repository websites, a total of 14 guidelines were included to analyze the evidence for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine treatments of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in the latest guidelinesin China and abroad. The analysis concluded that foreign guidelines consistently emphasize the importance of lifestyle interventions, and if these are ineffective, oral western medicines and intra-articular injections can be combined. Chinese guidelines specifically include characteristic TCM treatments for KOA, such as acupuncture, moxibustion,
Tuina
, herbal formulas, and traditional exercises, fully leveraging the advantages of TCM. The integrated TCM-western med
icine treatment of KOA shows significant benefits. Through summarizing the guideline contents, it was found that treatment methods are diverse and that differing opinions exist regarding treatment choices. Therefore, future efforts are needed to further improve the quality of clinical guidelines and provide references for optimizing integrated TCM and western medicine treatment of KOA.
