FAN Yongping's experience in differentiating and treating onset/recurrence of postpartum neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders using the method of "tonifying the liver and kidney and resolving phlegm and stasis"
Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are more common in women of childbearing age, and postpartum patients are at higher risk of disease onset or recurrence. Professor FAN Yongping believes that postpartum depletion of the "hundred meridians" is one of the triggering factors of NMOSD. After childbirth, sudden deficiency of
yin
and blood and impairment of the liver and kidney result in essence and blood failing to nourish the
eyes and tendons and meridians of the limbs.
Yin
-blood deficiency leads to excessive
qi
, which can transform into fire and cause upward disturbance of deficiency fire, further depleting
yin
and body fluids. The key pathogenesis can be summarized as liver and kidney
yin
deficiency with internal obstruction of phlegm and stasis. In traditional Chinese medicine, treatment primarily focuses on tonifying the liver and kidney and resolving phlegm and stasis.
