Pathogenesis and treatment of diabetes cognitive impairment based on the "Xuanfu theory"
Diabetes cognitive impairment (DCI) is an important complication of diabetes mellitus, primarily manifested as memory decline, executive dysfunction, and decreased attention. The pathogenesis of DCI remains unclear in modern medicine. According to the
Xuanfu
theory,
Xuanfu
refers to the body's orifices, serving as pathways for
qi
, blood, fluids, and spirit, and provides a new theoretical explanation for the pathogenesis of DCI. The occurrence and development of DCI are primarily related to the obstruction of
Xuanfu
.
Xuanfu
blockage leads to impaired circulation of
qi
, blood, and fluids, resulting in dysfunction of the brain's
Xuanfu
and disordered mental activity, which in turn causes cognitive decline. In treatment, opening the
Xuanfu
is the core principle. Among the methods, dispersing and opening the upper
Xuanfu
and clearing and opening the lower
Xuanfu
are especially important. These two approaches complement each other, regulating
qi
from the exterior and interior, upper and lower aspects, resolving obstruction, harmonizing yin and yang, and restoring
Xuanfu
function.
