Expert consensus on the application of the "brain-heart-kidney-essence chamber" axis in benign prostatic hyperplasia (2025 edition)
This consensus is based on the "brain-heart-kidney-essence chamber" axis theory and was developed through expert discussions organized by the Male Branch of the China Information Association for Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been registered on the International Practice Guideline Registration Platform (PREPARE-2025CN572). The consensus defines the core pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as dysfunction of the "brain-heart-kidney-essence chamber" axis, forming a complete pathogenic chain characterized by "malnourishment of the brain and heart" as the initiating factor, "kidney deficiency with impaired qi transformation" as the central link, and "blood stasis, turbidity, dampness, and heat in the essence chamber" as the pathological manifestations. Accordingly, the consensus proposes syndrome differentiation-based classification and corresponding herbal prescriptions for syndromes such as dampness-heat in the essence chamber and malnourishment of the brain and heart. It also establishes an acupoint selection protocol centered on "regulating the spirit, tonifying the kidney, and promoting unblocking", along with recommendations for prevention and health maintenance. This provides a multidimensional, individualized, and holistic syndrome differentiation-based strategy for the traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment of BPH.
