Objective

To observe the clinical efficacy of a self-made Chinese medicine gargle in the treatment of periodontitis with intense stomach fire syndrome.

Methods

A total of 100 patients with chronic periodontitis of intense stomach fire syndrome， treated at the Department of Stomatology， Guang'anmen Hospital South District of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences from March 2023 to March 2024 were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups using a random number method. Both groups received oral hygiene education and basic periodontal treatment. The observation group gargled with a self-made Chinese medicine solution for 2 min， 25–30 mL per use， 3 times a day. The control group gargled with 0.9% saline solution following the same method as the observation group. Both groups continued gargling for 2 weeks. The levels of interleukin-1β （IL-1β）， tumor necrosis factor-α （TNF-α）， high-sensitivity C-reactive protein （hs-CRP）， gingival index （GI）， sulcus bleeding index （SBI）， and traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） syndrome scores were compared between the two groups before and after treatment.

The self-made Chinese medicine gargle can reduce the periodontal inflammatory response in patients with periodontitis of intense stomach fire syndrome and improve periodontal status and clinical symptoms.
