Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a heterogeneous group of disorders. Professor WANG Tan categorizes ILD within the scope of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as "lung impediment". He considers "lung
qi
deficiency and unsteady striae and interstice" as the basis of pathogenesis, and emphasizes "
yang
deficiency with lung cold and obstruction of the lung collaterals" as the key pathological mechanism. He has established the treatment principle of "clearing first, then tonifying; internal clearing and external dispersing; purification leads to warming and unblocking", and applies a "two-stage, seven-syndrome" framework for differentiation and treatment, achieving satisfactory clinical outcomes.
